When I travel, I gain weight. That is the truth. Every time I travel I come back to the scale shouting at me that I just put on the 5 pounds, I worked hard weeks before losing. Why does this happen? I’m not eating how I normally do – healthy organic snacks and food.
When I travel bad habits, creep up. Waiting at the gate, well maybe I could use some candy while I wait. The flight is boring, so I need something to snack on. How about those Pringles that are ridiculously overpriced? Time for dinner – McDonald’s is where I land because it’s the closest thing to my gate.
It’s so easy to fall into these traps. After my recent business trip, I came back home to a number on the scale that I wasn’t happy with, and I decided that’s it. No more. I’m letting go of this notion that I can’t take healthy, organic snacks with me on flights.
Did you know that the TSA’s only restrictions are that any food items brought through security must either be whole, natural foods (like an apple) or be in placed in a container or otherwise wrapped up?

Nuts – Yes, they are boring, but they are packed full of protein, good fats, and antioxidants. All things that can help you stay healthy! Try to pick unroasted nuts because the roasting process decreases the nutrients.
Energy Bars – Not only do I pack these in my purse or carry-on, but I also pack a few for longer vacations in my checked luggage.
Whole Fruit – Get your zip bags out and pack them up with fruit. My favorite thing to pack is grapes because they are an easy organic snack, and they are hydrating. Other fruits could be clementines, apples, bananas, or oranges.
Dried Fruit – If you don’t want to pack a whole fruit, then grab a few bags of dried fruit instead, or you could make your own at home. Dried fruit is a refreshing and healthy snack, and the variety available makes it a natural choice.
Pre-Popped Popcorn – Individual bags of popcorn have healthy whole grains, are low in calories and are full of antioxidants. It’s not as the buttery movie popcorn, but it’s a much healthier option.

Chocolate – I’m not advocating that you eat a whole chocolate bar, but it’s better to have something on hand so you won’t be at the newsstand or Cinnabon loading up on sweets. Bring bars for your flight attendants too; it could give you extra attention. Also, it’s just a nice thing to do for those who are working hard to serve you.
Fruit snacks – These are not just for kids! I love eating these because they have loads of Vitamin C. Plus, who doesn’t love a fruit shaped like a bunny or a cow? The best thing about these is you can buy them in individual packages, great to shove into luggage or your purse.
Crackers – We all get cravings salty foods or something crunchy. These crackers are sure to delight. Some are packed with seeds and essential fats, while others can hit your pallet with a burst of Garlic, Ranch or Lime. Whatever variety you choose, this is a much better option than the chips the airline sells.
Beef Jerky – One of the greatest road-trip snacks has evolved a bit since its humble gas station days. Jerky comes in a variety of meats and with different seasonings – all of which are perfect for a long flight. Beef Jerky is an excellent snack that’s low in calories and high in Make sure to look out for added sugar sources; aim for jerkies that are less than 3 grams of sugar per serving.
Remember to drink water and then some more water, especially when flying. I get a bottle before I head on the plane and then some more when the drink cart comes around.
If you must eat at the airport, there are healthy options where you can order a salad or a sandwich on whole grain to take with you on your trip. Best bets: Turkey, grilled chicken, hummus (if they have it), and plenty of raw veggies even if all they have is lettuce, onions, and tomatoes.
With a little strategy, eating healthy organic snacks on the road is possible. Next time you pack your bags to head out of town, pack healthy snacks, too!
